IFIC Review: Understanding Food Allergy

June 2001

Surveys show that about one-third of all adults believe they have food allergies. Yet true food allergy is estimated to affect approximately four percent of the population. About 4-8% of children are diagnosed with food allergies, most of which are evident in the first years of life and can often be outgrown.

This IFIC Review provides an overview of food allergy, including the Big 8 food allergens (milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, soy, wheat, and shellfish), food allergy symptoms, diagnosis, and management.  This Review also describes how a food allergic reaction differs from a food intolerance.  Additionally, monosodium glutamate (MSG), sulfites, food colors, and other food additives are discussed.
